Ushuaia
The southernmost city in the world
Located between the last stretch of the Andes mountain range and the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego. Its name comes from the Yámana language and means “bay that faces the west.”
Due to its latitude (54° South), Ushuaia has the particularity of having the longest night in winter and the day with the most hours of light in summer. Of the five cities in the world recognized as “gateways” to Antarctica, Ushuaia is the closest port, just 1000 kilometers away from the Antarctic Peninsula.
